Does Baptist Health Take Your Medicare Advantage Plan? Lexington's 2026 Network Status

Here is the short answer for Lexington's three hospital systems. Three carriers are accepted at all three: Humana, Aetna, and Anthem. Those three sell 25 of the 40 Medicare Advantage plans a Fayette County resident can enroll in for 2026. UnitedHealthcare and WellCare are in-network at UK HealthCare and CHI Saint Joseph, but out-of-network at Baptist Health, which is another 11 plans. That single split decides where thousands of Lexington-area seniors can affordably get care, and most people find out after they have already enrolled. Below is the carrier-by-carrier picture for all three systems, where each status came from, and how to confirm it for your own plan.

Why you can trust this list (and when not to).Nothing here comes from a plan brochure or a sales sheet. The Baptist Health and UK HealthCare statuses come from those systems' own published insurance pages, checked in July 2026. The CHI Saint Joseph list is the set of Medicare Advantage carriers Saint Joseph confirms it accepts, as of August 2026. The plan counts come from the CMS CY2026 Medicare Advantage Landscape file for Fayette County. I re-check all of it every quarter and every January 1, because networks are renegotiated constantly. If you are reading this close to an enrollment decision, use the 10-minute verification steps at the bottom. A list like this is a starting point, never the final word.

First: this only matters if you have (or are considering) Medicare Advantage

Original Medicare has no network. If you have Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap supplement, every hospital in this article accepts you: UK HealthCare, Baptist Health, CHI Saint Joseph, and nearly every doctor in the Bluegrass. You can stop reading and go enjoy your day.

Medicare Advantage plans are private plans with contracts. Whether Baptist or UK is "in-network" depends on whether that hospital and your specific insurer have a signed contract this year. Those contracts are exactly what changed in Lexington, twice, in the last three years.

Baptist Health: who is in and who is out (2026)

Baptist Health publishes a payer status table on its own website covering Baptist Health hospitals and Baptist Health Medical Group providers statewide, which includes Baptist Health Lexington and the Baptist Health Hamburg campus. As of my July 2026 check, it shows:

CoverageStatus at Baptist HealthNotes
Original MedicareAcceptedNo network applies
All Medigap (Supplement) plansAcceptedPays alongside Original Medicare
Humana Medicare AdvantageIn-networkHospitals and medical group
Aetna Medicare AdvantageIn-networkListed as of Jan 1, 2026

Essence Medicare AdvantageOut-of-networkEffective January 1, 2026

The UnitedHealthcare and WellCare splits are not new: Baptist ended those contracts in January 2024, citing claim denials and payment delays, and they have not returned as of this writing. The Essence change is new for 2026. Essence Healthcare entered the Lexington market with heavy advertising, and plenty of folks who enrolled did not realize Baptist facilities would leave its network on January 1, 2026.

UK HealthCare: who is in (2026)

UK HealthCare, which includes UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, UK Good Samaritan, and the Markey Cancer Center, publishes an in-network insurance list on ukhealthcare.uky.edu. As of my July 2026 check, its Medicare Advantage section includes:

Source: UK HealthCare's published in-network insurance plans page, ukhealthcare.uky.edu. Verified July 2026. Individual plans under a carrier can differ; confirm your exact plan.

CHI Saint Joseph: the carriers Saint Joseph accepts (2026)

CHI Saint Joseph Health operates Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East in Lexington, plus hospitals across the surrounding counties. It does not publish a clean in-and-out payer table the way Baptist does, so this list is what Saint Joseph confirms it accepts, as of August 2026:

Source: CHI Saint Joseph Health accepted Medicare Advantage carriers, confirmed August 2026. Saint Joseph publishes an accepted-plans page but notes it is not exhaustive, so treat a carrier's absence here as "unconfirmed," not as "out-of-network." Confirm at (844) 303-9355 with your plan name.

All three systems, side by side

This is the table most people actually want. The left column lists every Medicare Advantage carrier a Fayette County resident can enroll in for 2026 during general enrollment, with how many plans each one sells here, so you can see how much of the market each row represents.

Carrier (2026 Fayette plans)Baptist HealthUK HealthCareCHI Saint Joseph

UnitedHealthcare (6 plans)Out-of-networkIn-networkAccepted

Essence Healthcare (2 plans)Out-of-networkNot listed, callNot listed, call

*UK's published list names Humana Choice (PPO) and Humana Gold Choice (PFFS) specifically. If you hold a Humana HMO, verify that plan by name. "Not listed, call" means the system does not publish a status for that carrier either way, so it is unconfirmed, not confirmed out. Only Baptist publishes explicit out-of-network statuses. Plan counts: CMS CY2026 Medicare Advantage Landscape file, Fayette County, general-enrollment plans only, pulled August 2026. Network statuses: Baptist and UK verified July 2026, Saint Joseph confirmed August 2026.

The one-sentence takeaway. With Humana, Aetna, or Anthem you are typically in-network at all three Lexington systems, and that covers 25 of the 40 plans sold here. With UnitedHealthcare or WellCare you are in-network at UK and Saint Joseph but not at Baptist, which is another 11 plans. Devoted is confirmed at Saint Joseph and unconfirmed at the other two. Essence is out at Baptist and unconfirmed at the other two. And with Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan, every one of these doors stays open, every year, without you having to check.

Two carriers show up on a hospital's list without being something you can actually buy here, and it is worth naming them so nobody wastes an afternoon: CareSource appears on UK's in-network list, but CareSource sells no Medicare Advantage plan in any Kentucky county for 2026. Passport by Molina appears on Saint Joseph's list, but its only Fayette plan this year is a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan, which is limited to people who have both Medicare and Medicaid.

Why this changes, and why it caught so many neighbors off guard

Hospital-insurer contracts are renegotiated on their own schedules, and either side can walk away. Kentucky has seen more of this lately, not less: carriers trimmed their Medicare Advantage footprints for 2026 (UnitedHealthcare alone left 109 counties nationwide), benefits budgets tightened, and hospitals pushed back on payment practices. The result is that a plan that was fine when you picked it can quietly stop covering your hospital the next January.

You are not powerless about it. Every fall, during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7), you can switch plans for the coming year. Your plan also has to send you an each September. The trap is that most people never read it. A yearly plan review exists precisely to catch a network break before it costs you.

How to verify your own plan in 10 minutes (do this before you enroll or switch)

1Look up your hospital in the plan's provider directoryEvery Medicare Advantage plan has an online "find a provider" tool. Search for the hospital and for each of your doctors by name, including specialists. "Baptist is in" does not automatically mean your specific Baptist physician is.
2Call the plan's member services lineAsk them to confirm your hospital and doctors are in-network for the plan year you care about, and note the date, time, and representative's name. If you are choosing during the fall, ask specifically about the upcoming January 1.
3Call the hospital's billing or managed-care officeAsk, "Are you in-network with [plan name] for 2026?" Directories lag behind real contract changes; the hospital knows its own contracts first. Baptist and UK also keep their insurance pages current, and CHI Saint Joseph answers at (844) 303-9355.

If all three answers agree, you can enroll with confidence. If they disagree, believe the hospital, and pick a different plan or get help sorting it out.

Common questions

Does Baptist Health take UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage in 2026?

No. Baptist Health hospitals and Baptist Health Medical Group providers, including Baptist Health Lexington, list UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage as out-of-network on Baptist's own published payer table, and have since January 2024. UK HealthCare's published in-network list does include UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage, so UHC members in Lexington are typically in-network at UK but not at Baptist. Verified July 2026; always confirm current status before enrolling.

Which Medicare Advantage plans are in-network at Baptist Health Lexington in 2026?

On Baptist Health's own published payer status table (verified July 2026), Humana Medicare Advantage, Aetna Medicare Advantage, and Anthem Medicare Advantage are listed as in-network for Baptist Health hospitals and medical group providers. UnitedHealthcare, WellCare, and Essence Medicare Advantage are listed as out-of-network. Original Medicare and all Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are accepted.

Does UK HealthCare take Medicare Advantage plans?

Yes. As of July 2026, UK HealthCare's published in-network insurance list includes Aetna Medicare Advantage, Anthem Medicare Advantage, Humana Choice (PPO) and Humana Gold Choice (PFFS) plans, UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage, WellCare Medicare Advantage, and CareSource Advantage. Note that CareSource does not sell a Medicare Advantage plan in Kentucky for 2026, so that entry only applies to someone who moved here holding one. Coverage can vary by specific plan, so confirm your exact plan with UK HealthCare and the insurer before care.

Which Medicare Advantage plans does CHI Saint Joseph accept in Lexington?

As of August 2026, CHI Saint Joseph Health confirms it accepts Aetna, Anthem, Devoted Health (effective January 1, 2025), Humana, UnitedHealthcare, WellCare, and Passport by Molina Medicare Advantage at Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East. Saint Joseph does not publish an exhaustive in-and-out payer table, so a carrier missing from that list is unconfirmed rather than confirmed out-of-network. Call (844) 303-9355 with your plan name to check.

Which Medicare Advantage carriers work at all three Lexington hospital systems?

Humana, Aetna, and Anthem are the three carriers currently in-network or accepted at Baptist Health, UK HealthCare, and CHI Saint Joseph. Those three sell 25 of the 40 Medicare Advantage plans available to a Fayette County resident in 2026, per the CMS CY2026 Landscape file. UnitedHealthcare and WellCare work at UK and Saint Joseph but not at Baptist. Original Medicare with a Medigap plan has no network and is accepted at all three regardless.

Does Baptist Health accept Original Medicare and Medigap plans?

Yes. Original Medicare has no network, and Baptist Health, UK HealthCare, and CHI Saint Joseph all accept it. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans pay alongside Original Medicare, so they are accepted anywhere Original Medicare is. Network worries only apply to Medicare Advantage plans.

What happened between Baptist Health and Essence Medicare Advantage?

Essence Healthcare, a Medicare Advantage insurer that entered the Lexington market, went out-of-network with Baptist Health hospitals and providers effective January 1, 2026, per Baptist's published payer table. Essence members can still use other Lexington systems that contract with Essence, but Baptist facilities are out-of-network.

Quick recap

Humana, Aetna, and Anthem are accepted at all three Lexington systems, and they sell 25 of the 40 Medicare Advantage plans available in Fayette County for 2026.
Verified July 2026 against the hospitals' own pages: Baptist Health is in-network with Humana, Aetna, and Anthem Medicare Advantage, and out-of-network with UnitedHealthcare, WellCare (both since January 2024), and Essence (since January 1, 2026).
UK HealthCare's published list includes Aetna, Anthem, Humana (Choice PPO and Gold Choice PFFS), UnitedHealthcare, WellCare, and CareSource, though CareSource sells no Kentucky Medicare Advantage plan in 2026.
CHI Saint Joseph confirms Aetna, Anthem, Devoted Health, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, WellCare, and Passport by Molina as of August 2026. Its list is not exhaustive, so a carrier's absence means unconfirmed, not out.
The practical difference: UnitedHealthcare and WellCare members, 11 plans between them, are in-network at UK and Saint Joseph but not at Baptist. Humana, Aetna, and Anthem members are covered at all three.
Original Medicare and all Medigap plans have no network; every Lexington hospital system accepts them.
Networks change every year. Verify with the plan directory, the plan's phone line, and the hospital itself before you enroll, and review your plan each fall.
